Sensei Mason was originally introduced to
Martial Arts back in 1970 when he began wrestling competitively at Lake Orion
High School. He then attended Wayne State University on a wrestling scholarship
and majored in Physical Education. He began training in Koei-Kan Karate-Do in
1977 under the direction of Jack M. Sabat (currently West Coast director). He
now studies directly under Sensei Brian Frost (Chief Technical Director U.S.
Division).
Mason is currently Rokudan (6th Degree Black Belt) and an
Internationally certified instructor registered with the Koei-Kan Karate-Do
headquarters in Tokyo, Japan. He is the only person - outside of Japan – to
create an Instructional Video (DVD) for the Koei-Kan Karate-Do System – “ Nage
no Kata (Basic Take-Down and Throwing Forms) of Koei-Kan Karate-Do.”
Mr. Mason
has won several Championships, including all four Black Belt Divisions at the
International Koei-Kan Karate-Do Tournament. Encompassing four Grand
Championships as well as five weapons titles.
He believes Koei-Kan to be the "Premier Martial Art due to it's diversification
and practicality". He is a registered member of the All-Japan Karate-Do
Association and the International Koei-Kan Karate-Do Federation.
In 1987 he competed, officiated and demonstrated in a two day International
Tournament held in Athens, Greece in order to increase his knowledge and skills
as well as augment the growth and development of the Koei-Kan Karate-Do SyStem. Sensei
Mason
emerged undefeated until the final match which was consider a draw due to its
duration.
Mason has been teaching Koei-Kan Karate-Do since 1980 and has instructed
a wealth of students all across the United States. In 1994, Sensei Mason
organized and directed the first Koei-Kan Karate-Do Bushi Gashuku. This Warrior
Special Training Camp was the first held in the United States and this
overwelming successful camp drew participants and instructors from across the
country.
Sensei Mason
has been featured by area media including "Channel 7 News" as well as Detroit's
own "Kelly & Company" where he demonstrated the amazing "Bed of Nails"
break. He has also appeared in "Black Belt Magazine" and the National
Publication of "Who's Who in American Martial Arts".
